Higher Education in Palau Colleges

The island nation of Palau is located about 500 miles east of the Philippines and 2000 miles south of Tokyo. It is also one the youngest countries in the world, as it was granted independence from United States' control in 1994. The country is about the size of an average town in the United States, with a land mass of 177 square miles and a population of approximately 20,000 people. It is divided into sixteen states, with most of the population (12,676 people in 2005) centered in the islands which make up the state of Koror.

Palau's economic development is quite strong and has been bolstered significantly by the United States' government's assistance towards the nation. The main industries of the country are subsistence agriculture, fishing, and tourism. Palau has benefited from the meteoric economic rise of neighboring East Asian nations and their increased tendency to travel. Higher education is available through Palau Community College, but those who wish to attend larger and more prestigious universities must travel abroad to other schools.
