Items that need to be Answered from the College You are Considering

Just like people, universities and colleges are very unique. Each one has its own way of teaching, a life on campus all its own, procedures for enrolling and of course the reputation among businesses and the public. In order to pick a school suited for you there are some questions to ask before applying for admission.

Along with receiving a good education, the school you choose will be your first step in a career journey.

Keep in mind that the following list is not inclusive. And there are some items that will not apply if you are considering an online school or community college.

  1. What is the typical GPA for students that are accepted to your school? In addition, what is their average college entrance exam score?
  2. What is the percentage of total student applications that are accepted as students annually?
  3. Can students receive credit for successfully completing IB or AP courses in high school?
  4. What is the ratio of students to teachers?
  5. Do professors teach the freshman level courses?
  6. How soon must a student declare their intended major?
  7. How many students actually finish their bachelor's degree in four years? What percentage of students pursues a higher degree at this school, such as a master's degree?
  8. What classes and how many credits are necessary to receive the degree that interests me?
  9. When submitting an application how does the college handle college entrance exams? Is it possible to use high scores on one section from a particular date, or is the entire test from one date used as a deciding factor?
  10. What is the typical number of students per class in the degree program that I am considering?
  11. What are the demographics of the current student population?
  12. How many students live off campus in comparison to the number of students that live on-campus?
  13. How many students are a part of the Greek organizations?
  14. What mediums of teaching are used by the professors for the degree I am considering (lectures, assignments in the field, discussions with the class, etc.)?
  15. Did tuition, fees, and room & board increase over last year's prices? If so, what was the percentage change?
  16. Does the school offer an early action plan or an early decision deadline?
  17. What are the final due dates to apply for financial aid as well as admissions?
  18. What is the deadline for the school to decide on admissions and how will I be contacted?
  19. Is there a requirement for a deposit once admission is granted? If so can it be refunded?
  20. Do different degrees have separate requirements for admission into the college?

The admissions counselors at the college will be a great source of information and can answer most any question. In addition, a lot of information can be found from the materials requested from the school's admission office.
