Online Learning Equipment Requirements

If you guessed you’ll need a computer to complete a distance learning program, you guessed correctly! But chances are, you’ll need more. Some online classes need nothing more than email capability. Others require more including different types of conferencing equipment. It’s always a good idea to find out exactly what equipment you’ll need before signing up for any online class.

As far as the basics go, here’s the minimum equipment most online learning programs require:
  • A fairly recently manufactured computer (ideally not more than 3 years old)
  • High-speed internet capability (wireless will give you the most flexibility)
  • A television with DVD (and perhaps even a VCR!)
  • CD player
  • Email account

Before you go out and purchase all this equipment, which can get pretty expensive, know what your options are. The public library is actually a great, free resource with access to more than just books. Most have internet connected computers available for use during business hours. Some even loan other electronic equipment you may need. Renting is another option, as is purchasing lower cost used computers and equipment.

If the computer is set up for wireless access, meaning it can access the internet using radio waves, you have more distance learning connection options than you probably realize. Plus, you won’t need an internet connection at home. For no or low cost, you can access the internet wirelessly from your favorite fast food restaurants, internet cafes, bookstores, public spaces, coffee shops, and many other local businesses.
