Southern Association of Colleges and Schools

From the Florida coast to the Longhorn State and north to the home of the Derby, all levels of school are under the jurisdiction of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.  One of the six Regional Accrediting organizations, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools was founded in Atlanta in 1895 at a meeting of representatives from six southern colleges.

Over the years, the Association grew to include all educational institutions, including the elementary and secondary levels.   For administrative purposes, it is now divided into the Council on Accreditation and School Improvement, with jurisdiction over Elementary, Middle and Secondary Schools, and the Commission on Colleges which has authority over post-secondary education.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges administers accreditation for schools in the eleven states in the southeast as well as certain schools in Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and overseas. These are often colleges and universities, but may also be more career-oriented institutes, like those devoted to theology, health sciences, and technology. The Commission accredits educational programs on some United States military bases and a broad range of online colleges.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools is recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Because of this, the courses offered by its accredited schools are eligible for certain federal, state and local grants and subsidies. To see if the program you’re interested in is Regionally Accredited by the SACS, check their membership directory at the link listed below.
