Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools

The Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools oversees and accredits private postsecondary schools which offer certificates and diplomas, as well as postsecondary institutions which offer associate, bachelor’s or master’s degrees. In all these cases the aim is to train students for professional, technical or occupational jobs. These accredited programs include some available through distance education.

Institutions under the jurisdiction of the ACICS offer hundreds of courses and programs in a wide range of studies. Here are the main types of training as provided by the Council: Accounting, Allied Health, Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement, Business Administration and Management, Computer Systems, Networking and Telecommunications, Computer Electronics and Engineering Technology, Drafting and Design, Paralegal training, Culinary Arts and many more. The Council’s commitment is to main high standards of excellence in all the programs it accredits.

The National Association of Accredited Commercial Schools was founded at a meeting of private career school educators in Chicago in 1912. Its principal goal was “to establish and advance the quality of education and the standards of excellence at private career schools and colleges.” The body has gone through many changes over the years, including a merger with the National Council of Business Schools in 1949.

Now based in Washington D.C., the ACICS is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. It accredits hundreds of institutions, primarily in the United States but including schools in Puerto Rico and a number of foreign countries.

All colleges and schools accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools are eligible for Title IV federal financial aid programs. To see if your career-oriented school or program is accredited by the ACICS, check the website listing below.
