Supplies for the Dorms

Your Journey to College

If you are reading this, chances are you are excited to be entering your first year at college or university. You have partaken in the exhaustive process of preparing for the SAT, taking the exam, and then applying to numerous colleges and universities. This process may have been somewhat annoying and time consuming but it paid off as you were accepted to one of the colleges or universities that you applied to. You may think that the process of preparing for college is over, but this is not true. You have only begun to scratch the surface of the necessary things to do. You will be moving into a dorm, and there are some things that you need for this.

What do Dorms Typically Provide for You?

Different colleges and universities have different setups for their dorms and thus provide different amenities for students. There are, however, several basic essentials that all dorms will have in their rooms. Furniture is already available in the dorm but it is generally the bare minimum of features required to live in the room. This furniture will typically include a bed, desk, and a closet or a dresser. Some colleges and universities also provide students with miniature refrigerators in their dorms, but these are not available at all schools.

What Things are Necessities for You in Dorm Life?

As far as furniture goes, depending on the amount of clothing you have, you may need to purchase another dresser or container to hold clothing if what the college provides is not enough. Aside from furniture, there are a variety of things you will need to have a comfortable experience living in the dorms. You need a supply of toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, shaving cream, razor, soap, shampoo, sponge, and deodorant). You should also have a first aid kit handy in case you become sick or injure yourself somehow.

Regarding studying, there are some supplies that you cannot live without. You should have notebooks, writing instruments, and preferably a calculator. A computer is also nearly a necessity given the abundance of work that you will probably have to do on a computer.

What Comforts can you buy that are not Required?

Most dorms will not provide you with a television in the room. This is one thing that you can bring to the dorm to enhance your living experience. When you are bored and want to relax, there are times when you may want to just lay in bed and watch some television. Another thing to possibly bring, if it is not provided by the college or university, is a miniature refrigerator. While you may have a meal plan, you will want to grab a snack or some food without leaving your room and this is where the refrigerator comes in handy. Another thing to consider, if it is not provided for, is a microwave. If you are up late at night studying and the cafeteria is closed, you can heat up some food in the microwave to give you the energy you need to stay awake.
