Career Tips for College Grads

So you have graduated college and are now looking for something to do for the rest of your life. Though this might seem like a scary time, it is also a very exciting time. You put in all of that work and effort to get to this point, so stay organized that way you can enjoy this possibly life-changing experience of choosing a career.

Career Tip #1

The first thing you want to do is make sure your resume’ is up to date. Cut out everything you do not need so it all fits on one page. Companies do not want a list of retail stores and eateries as your job experience. They want to see the work experience you have gained through your classes and internship(s) as well as any work you may have done during college that pertains to your area of study. Don’t do anything fancy, just make sure everything is correct, up-to-date, and organized accordingly.

Career Tip #2

Another great thing to do is to sign up on job hunting sites. Companies always look to hire through these sites as it is one of the best ways to see who is looking in what departments. You will get notices via E-mail regarding the available positions that pertain to you. Sign up on at least two so you get more variety than one site would offer.

Career Tip #3

The third thing to do is practice, practice, practice those interview skills. See a coach, go on any interview you can get and pay close attention to what you are saying and doing during those interviews. Make notes as a reminder not to do certain things and to ensure you do certain things. You want to make the best first impression possible since you are likely not the only one interviewing for the job.

Career Tip #4

Lastly, do not get discouraged if you do not get the first job you apply for. There is a lot of competition out there and everyone needs practice and time before finding a great job. Not everything offered to you is going to be wonderful, so you might just be lucky if you do not get certain jobs. Just think of it as there is likely something better out there more suitable for you that just has not crossed your path yet. Never stop going on interviews and checking your E-mail for available jobs. There is something out there for everyone you just have to find your niche in the workforce and do your best!
